"Louise is an 88 year old widow. Having been on social security for more than 20 years, her benefits do not come close to meeting her expenses. Her property taxes alone consume nearly a third of her income. She was referred by a neighbor who expressed concern that her house was unbearably cold. We discovered that she set the heat at 55 and wore a coat and sweater in the house, to assure her heating budget would last the winter. A small grant from Catholic Charities has made the difference between 55 degrees and 68 degrees; between marginally healthy and dangerously cold for her advanced age. She still wears a sweater, but is proud that her home and her pride are both intact.
Her contact with Catholic Charities has also opened the door to a friendly visitor who will be able to quietly observe potentially harmful conditions, while providing much needed warmth and human contact."
